The abundance pattern of O , Mg , Si and Fe in the intracluster medium of the Centaurus cluster observed with XMM - Newton

چکیده
The abundances of O, Mg, Si and Fe in the intracluster medium of the Centaurus cluster are derived. The Fe abundance has a negative radial gradient. In solar units, the Si abundance is close to the Fe abundance, while the O and Mg abundances are much smaller. The high Fe/O and Si/O ratio indicate that metal supply from supernovae Ia is important and supernovae Ia synthesize Si as well as Fe. Within 2′, the O and Mg abundances are consistent with the stellar metallicity of the cD galaxy derived from the Mg2 index. This result indicates that the central gas is dominated by the gas from the cD galaxy. The observed abundance pattern of the Centaurus cluster resembles to those observed in center of other clusters and groups of galaxies. However, the central Fe abundance and the Si/Fe ratio are 40 % higher and 30% smaller than those of M 87, respectively. Since the accumulation timescale of the supernovae Ia is higher in the Centaurus cluster, these differences imply a time dependence of nucleosynthesis by supernovae Ia.

The elemental abundances in the intracluster medium as observed with XMM-Newton
XMM-Newton observations of 19 galaxy clusters are used to measure the elemental abundances and their spatial distributions in the intracluster medium. The sample mainly consists of X-ray bright and relaxed clusters with a cD galaxy. Along with detailed Si, S and Fe radial abundance distributions within 300-700 kpc in radius, the O abundances are accurately derived in the central region of the c...

متن کاملAstronomy and Astrophysics Xmm-newton Observations of the Cluster of Galaxies Abell 496 Measurements of the Elemental Abundances in the Intracluster Medium
The results from XMM-Newton observations of the relaxed cluster of galaxies Abell 496 are presented. The spatially-resolved X-ray spectra taken by the European Pho-ton Imaging Cameras show a temperature drop and a Fe abundance increase in the intra-cluster medium (ICM) towards the cD galaxy at the cluster center. The abundances of Si and S also show a central enhancement. High resolution soft X...
متن کاملXmm-newton Measurements of the Elemental Abundances in the Intracluster Medium
Based on XMM-Newton observations of a sample of galaxy clusters, we have measured the elemental abundances (mainly O, Si, S, and Fe) and their spatial distributions in the intracluster medium (ICM). In the outer region of the ICM, observations of the O:Si:S:Fe ratio are consistent with the solar value, suggesting that the metals in the ICM were produced by a mix of supernovae (SNe) Ia and II. O...
متن کاملXMM observation of M 87 II . Abundance
Based on a detailed study of the temperature structure of the intracluster medium in the halo of M 87, abundance profiles of 7 elements, O, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe are derived. In addition, abundance ratios are derived from the ratios of line strengths, whose temperature dependences are small within the temperature range of the ICM of M 87. The abundances of Si, S, Ar, Ca and Fe show strong d...
